Measuring a 600 V photovoltaic string with a hardware-store meter rated 300 V is a very bad idea. During a transient overvoltage the instrument can explode in the operator's hand. CAT III 1000 V is not a selling point, it is a safety requirement.
This model measures DC voltage up to 1000 V, current to 10 A, resistance, continuity, capacitance and temperature. True-RMS gives accurate readings on the non-sinusoidal signals an inverter produces, where an averaging meter is off by 10 to 40 %.
Silicone leads stay flexible in cold weather and retractable-shroud probe tips reduce the risk of accidentally shorting two close terminals. Backlight, hold and auto-off round out the package.
The power of intelligent energy management
CAT III 1000 V means the internal circuits absorb a transient surge of several thousand volts without internal arcing. That is what protects your hand.
An inverter's output is never a perfect sine. An averaging meter shows a false voltage; true RMS gives the real value.
Silicone leads that do not stiffen at -20 °C and a backlit display readable in a poorly lit technical room.
